You’re open to ideas on how to improve your leadership qualities, but darn are you busy. Wouldn’t it be great if there was a concise, accessible list of ways to shift your behavior that could make a big difference?
I thought so. You’re welcome.
Let me challenge you to focus on one per day and experience the result of your effort. Then reflect on your observations.
Here goes:
1) Pick your battles
Better to win the war instead of some unimportant fights. In other words: Focus on what is most important.
2) Add value where it matters
You don’t have to be involved in everything.
3) Make decisions not judgments
People are their often their own worst critic. No need to add fuel to the fire.
4) Be careful of sarcasm
Sharp and witty comments are often not funny to some and can exacerbate a situation.
5) Eliminate the words ‘but’ and ‘however’ from your vocabulary
You are signaling that you are right and they are wrong.
6) Be humble
No need to demonstrate your elevated status.
7) Know when you are angry and give yourself a time out
Anger is not a successful management tool.
8) Embrace possibility rather than negativity
Acknowledge people’s courage to think outside the box.
9) Share information
Transparency builds trust.
10) Recognize and acknowledge character traits
It is meaningful to be lauded for humility and courage.
And a bonus one:
11) Celebrate wins
Ignoring positive outcomes is demotivating.
